During the past month we have been learning about plants and bugs. While studying about plants we painted pots and planted marigold seeds. The children spent weeks watching their seeds grow. The children also learned about bugs that they may typically see in a Minnesota summer- bees, caterpillars, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers and of course MOSQUITOES.
Ms. Kari’s Pre-K Group
During the month of June we learned about baseball. During this time we did some fun baseball crafts. We made baseball fans, baseball magnets and very cute baseball bracelets that we stitched ourselves. We also practiced our baseball skills by playing catch with our baseball gloves in our own outdoor stadium (playground).
Ms. Collene’s K and 1st Graders
During this past month, our group had been learning about plants and bugs. First, we read about the cycle of life for plants and how a plant grows from a seed, then a seedling, then leaves, flowers or fruit. Inside the flower/fruit is seeds to produce a new plant. We planted grass seeds, flower bulbs, green beans, and clipped plants to root. Next, we learned that bugs are everywhere by reading books, collecting them from the courtyard, and we even found a bug behind a door inside. We made art projects of ladybugs, bugs, and butterflies.
Ms. Heather’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders
Our group has been learning about different countries in Africa. We kicked off our unit with a slide show and presentation from Ms. Jacki and her son from Kenya. The students were able to ask questions and see pictures and learn Swahili words. We read the book Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams and made our own Galimoto. A Galimoto is a toy that children in Africa make out of scraps of wire. We spent a day in the computer lab following a scavenger hunt to compare the lives of students in Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda to our daily lives. We also played outdoor games from South Africa and Ghana.
Ms. Alayna’s 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Graders
Our group has also been studying the different countries in Africa. We joined Ms. Heather’s group for the presentations by Ms.Jacki and her son Nick about Africa. We experimented with some different types of art projects. We made elaborate, traditional beaded neckwear. We first created patterns of our own and then used strong wire and beads to create a bracelet similar to the necklace that Ms. Jacki brought from Africa to share with us. We created tribal masks using beans and raffia and Khamsa hands, a symbol for good luck from Morocco. We are also in the planning stages of a community service project to collect needed books for Nick’s village in Kenya.
